At the request of any recreational boat owner, a qualified member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will perform a complete safety examination of a boat and its equipment. This includes personal water craft and sailing vessels. This exam is free to the boat owner, and can be performed whether the boat is in the water or on land. The exam generally takes from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size and type of the vessel. The owner must be present during the exam, and must have a current vessel registration or documentation papers available at the time of the exam. The principal purpose of the exam is to ensure that the vessel meets all federal and state requirements for its size and type, and that all equipment is of the correct type and in good working condition. The exam is totally voluntary, and no citations are given for any deficiencies found. The examiner will also answer questions concerning equipment and vessel operations. A vessel that meets all legal requirements for its size and type, will be awarded a decal which is good for one year. A vessel exam can be scheduled by contacting one of the qualified examiners listed below. |
